Join in! event a major success

The “Join in!” event in Kington on 29th October was a major success.  The showcase event was to get the Kington groups networking and engaging new ‘recruits’.  The feedback from everyone was overwhelming positive.

Hosted by Marches Access Point (MAP)and supported by Herefordshire Voluntary Action, the event was held at The Burton Hotel, Kington on Saturday 29th October, 2011.

Groups reported that the event helped them build links with other groups and successfully recruit new volunteers.  Over 40 Kington groups took part and over 250 people attended the event.  Six groups recruited new volunteers and others reported enquiries and interest from many others.

Cllr Bob Widdowson, Mayor of Kington said, ‘Kington depends on its community volunteers for so much.  “Join in!” was a great opportunity to see what they do and for them to encourage people to volunteer.  MAP is to be congratulated for organising “Join in!”  It was truly a catalyst for community engagement.’

Groups attending included the British Red Cross, Community Wheels, Kington Country Market, Kington Horticultural Society, the Luncheon Club and Day Centre, Kington Lions, the local Police and Fire Services.

Join the Cooks of Country Markets

An initiative is being rolled out across the country that is calling on Britain’s home cooks to help bring fantastic, wholesome locally made produce into neighbourhood shops. Supported by the Big Lottery funded Making Local Food Work project, this scheme is behind the creation of an exciting new brand of local food from ‘The Cooks of Country Markets’. The brand covers a wide range of fabulous produce from jams, marmalades and chutneys to homemade cakes, cookies, pies and pastries. The products are all homemade in the local area by the Cooks of Country Markets who are now looking for new cooks to help them bring an even bigger range of great tasting produce into more of our local shops.

Kington Country Market is part of this network and is held on Friday mornings between 10.00am and 11.00am in the Baptist School Room. It is now looking for additional home cooks to swell its ranks and help it expand ‘The Cooks of Country Markets’ range. They would like to hear from anyone who loves cooking and would be interested in earning some extra income by cooking tasty local food at home to sell in our local shops or the local Country Market.

Victory for Kington!

Just to confirm, I had a phone call from Cllr Blackshaw this morning to confirm that the decision to impose charges on the High St car park – better known as the NISA car park – has been rescinded.
Kington Town Council, the Chamber of Trade and Mike Ashby of NISA met with him 10 days ago and the points we made about the impact on the town and the lack of alternative parking for many users have been accepted.
Many thanks to everyone who wrote, signed the petition and contributed to the campaign. Well done Kington!

Bob Widdowson
Mayor
